An Overview of Hydroids

Hydroids are a type of vascular cell found in bryophytes. These cells are long, thin, and colourless, and they contain water. Hydroids do not have any living protoplasm. Their main function is to act as a conducting tissue known as hydrome, which carries minerals and water from the soil. These cells are comparable to the xylem tracheids in vascular plants.

A Closer Look at Leptoids

Leptoids are living cell structures that surround the hydroids. These bundles are responsible for carrying nutrients and sugar molecules. Like hydroids, leptoids are also conducting cells found in certain bryophytes . They are similar to the sieve elements of the phloem in other plants. Mature leptoids have inclined cell walls with tiny pores and nuclei.

Frequently Asked Questions

A stereid is a plant cell that has a thick cell wall. It provides mechanical support to the cell. These stereids are usually present in hydroids and are absent in most leptoid cells.

They are the water-conducting components of the xylem tissue. These are tubular cells that also provide mechanical support to the plant. Most angiosperms use vessels as their tracheary element.

They are specialised cells that are vital for the functioning of phloem. They aid in conducting sugar molecules over long-distance. The two types of sieve elements are – sieve tubes and sieve cells.
