Given:

A jeep travels to a place 300 km away at an average speed of 60 km/h and returns at a speed of 30 km/h.

Concept used:

When the distance is constant, the average speed = 2xy/x+y (where x and y are the two speeds at which the same distance has been covered.)

Calculation:

Here, the travelled distance is the same i.e. 300 km.

According to the concept,

The average speed for the whole journey

⇒ (2 × 60 × 30) ÷ (60 + 30)

⇒ 3600 ÷ 90

⇒ 40 km/h

∴ The average speed for the whole journey is 40 km/h.
