Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFJean Piaget made a systematic study of cognitive development among children of different age groups and he categorized it into different developmental stages. He is also known as the father of child Psychology. According to him, development is based on the physical environment or Biological abilities, he ignores social aspects.
According to him stages of the cognitive development are-
- Sensory-motor:(birth to 2 years) - (Adaptation)
- Preoperational: (from age 2 years to 7 years) - (Assimilation)
- Concrete operational:(from 7 years to 11 years) - (Accomodation)
- Formal operational: (from11+ - adolescence and adulthood). - (Equilibrition).
Key Points
- Accommodation: Jean Piaget defined accommodation as the cognitive process of revising existing cognitive schemas, perceptions, and understanding so that new information can be incorporated. This happens when the existing schema (knowledge) does not work and needs to be changed to deal with a new object or situation.
- Example: A child who understands that a four-legged creature is called a dog. Then, the child encounters a cat and refers to it as a dog until corrected by a parent. After being corrected, the child can distinguish between a dog and a cat.
Thus by all these references we can conclude that In Piagetian theory, the process in which a child transforms and modifies her schema to make sense of a new experience is called accommodation.
Hint
- Centration is the tendency to focus on one salient aspect of a situation and neglect other, possibly relevant aspects.
- Conservation refers to a logical thinking ability that allows a person to determine that a certain quantity will remain the same despite the adjustment of the container, shape, or apparent size.
Important Points
- Adaptation: Adaptation is one schema that describes how people learn and understand new information.
- Example: a child seeing a dog and learning what it is.
- Assimilation: Piaget defined assimilation as the cognitive process of fitting new information into existing cognitive schemas, perceptions, and understanding.
- Example: When a child learns the word for dog, they start to call all four-legged animals dogs.
- Equilibration: Equilibration involves the assimilation of information to fit with an individual's own existing mental schemas and the accommodation of information by adapting it to their way of thinking.
- Example: a child loves the soups that their family eats on a regular basis.
