In Piagetion theory, the process in which a child transforms and modifies her schema to make sense of new experience is called-

Jean Piaget made a systematic study of cognitive development among children of different age groups and he categorized it into different developmental stages. He is also known as the father of child Psychology. According to him, development is based on the physical environment or Biological abilities, he ignores social aspects.

According to him stages of the cognitive development are-

• Sensory-motor:(birth to 2 years) - (Adaptation)
• Preoperational: (from age 2 years to 7 years) - (Assimilation)
• Concrete operational:(from 7 years to 11 years) - (Accomodation)
• Formal operational: (from11+ - adolescence and adulthood). - (Equilibrition).

• Accommodation: Jean Piaget defined accommodation as the cognitive process of revising existing cognitive schemas, perceptions, and understanding so that new information can be incorporated. This happens when the existing schema (knowledge) does not work and needs to be changed to deal with a new object or situation.
  • Example: A child who understands that a four-legged creature is called a dog. Then, the child encounters a cat and refers to it as a dog until corrected by a parent. After being corrected, the child can distinguish between a dog and a cat.
