Wire drawing is a cold working process to obtain wires from rods of bigger diameters through a die. It is same process as bar drawing except that it involves smaller‐diameter material. To obtain bright shining surface thin fluid lubricant is obtained .

If properly processed the wire is evenly coated with a thin layer of dry lime on a matt surface, making an exceedingly strong bond with the dry soap which is fed into the drawing die under pressure as the wire is being drawn.

Copper coated wire is usually wet-drawn with a fluid lubricant in order to give a shining bright finish. Stainless steel wire which work-hardens very rapidly and which cannot be given a matt surface necessary for dry drawing with soap, is coated with a thin layer of lubricants.
