The area bounded by the curve x = f(y), the y-axis and the two lines y = a and y = b is equal to:

  1. \(\int_a^b y \ dx\)
  2. \(\int_a^b y^2 \ dx\)
  3. \(\int_a^b x \ dy\)

Concept:

The area (A) under the curve y = f(x) between x = a & x = b is given by,

A = \(\rm \displaystyle\int_a^b f(x) \ dx\)

Calculation:

Here, the curve x = f(y) and lines y = a and y = b

∴Area = \(\rm \int _a^bf(y)dy \cdots (\text{function is f(y)})\)

\(\rm \displaystyle\int_a^b x \ dy\)

(∵ f(y) = x)

Hence, option (3) is correct.
