Download Solution PDFNational Education Commissions were set up by the government to deal with issues and problems faced in the education sector and to improve the quality of our education system.
Indian Education Commission (1964-1966):
- It is popularly known as Kothari Commission, was an ad hoc commission set up by the Government of India to examine all aspects of the educational sector in India, to evolve a general pattern of education, and to advise guidelines and policies for the development of education in India.
- It was formed on 14 July 1964 under the chairmanship of Daulat Singh Kothari, then chairman of the University Grants Commission.
- It proposed the Three-language Formula till class 10. The Three-language Formula states that the first, second, and third languages in school will be:
- First language -The first language which should be taught in school should be the mother tongue o regional language.
- Second language - Any modern language or English, in Hindi-speaking states.
- Third language- English or any modern Indian language that is not being taught as the second language, in Hindi-speaking states.
- This commission has made a clear distinction between the teaching of English as a skill and the teaching of English literature as it has divided the content of the language at different levels in accordance with the age and interest of students.
Thus, it is clear that the Indian Education Commission (1964-1966) has made a distinction between the teaching of English as a skill and the teaching of English literature.
