Earth is called the "Blue Planet" because it looks blue from space due to the presence of water on its surface.
Around 71% of the Earth's surface is covered with water.
While the other 29% consists of continents and islands.
There are various natural sources of water that are used by humans.
They are used for carrying out daily activities like drinking, washing, and cleaning purposes and also used by animals and birds for drinking purposes.

Key Points

Water scarcity will possibly pose the greatest challenge on earth.
It is because of increased demand coupled with shrinking supplies.
There is over utilisation of water due to increasing population which is also one of the causes of increasing water pollution.
Water pollution is the addition of unwanted material into water that makes it unfit for human consumption.
With increasing reliance on water bodies for waste disposal etc, there has been ever-increasing water pollution.

Rainwater:

Rainwater is known as the primary source of water which gets collected at rivers and lakes and some of this water is also available as groundwater.
Rainwater is considered the primary source of water because the lost water from other sources like rivers or lakes can easily be replenished by rainwater.
It is the only process by which new water is added to the ecosystem.
Water harvesting is a practice to conserve water by collecting excess rainwater in an organized way.
The excess rainwater is not allowed to flow and get wasted but collected in tanks.

Thus, excess rainfall is not responsible for the deficiency of water.
