Himalayan Rivers

Peninsular Rivers

Himalayan rivers originate from the Himalayas, which are the highest mountain range in the world.

Peninsular rivers originate from the peninsular plateau, which is a large landmass surrounded by water on three sides.

Himalayan rivers are fed by melting glaciers and snowfall in the Himalayas.

Peninsular rivers primarily depend on rainfall received within the peninsular region.

Himalayan rivers exhibit significant seasonal variations in their water flow. They experience high water flow during the monsoon season and comparatively lower flow during the dry season.

Peninsular rivers have a relatively more consistent flow throughout the year. They maintain a moderate water flow even during the dry season.

Himalayan rivers tend to be longer in length compared to Peninsular rivers.

Peninsular rivers are generally shorter in length compared to Himalayan rivers.

Himalayan rivers have a steep and fast-flowing course due to the mountainous terrain.

Peninsular rivers have a relatively gentle and slow-flowing course due to the relatively flat terrain.

Himalayan rivers have a dendritic or treelike drainage pattern, with numerous tributaries joining the main river.

Peninsular rivers have a radial or fan-shaped drainage pattern, with rivers flowing outward from a central point.

Some examples of Himalayan rivers include the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Indus.

Some examples of Peninsular rivers include the Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri.

Himalayan Rivers and Peninsular Rivers are the two main river types in India. The Himalayan mountains are where the enduring rivers known as Himalayan rivers have their beginnings. Peninsular rivers, on the other hand, are the result of their Western Ghats origin and do not flow consistently.

About Himalayan Rivers in India

A river system comprises a river and all its tributaries. The Himalayas are crossed by major rivers like the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra, which have extensive lengths and significant tributaries. Among the 19 major rivers draining the Himalayas, the largest are the Indus and the Brahmaputra. Emerging from the northern high mountain ranges, the primary Himalayan rivers cascade through steep gorges, often guided by geological features like fault lines.

Indus River

The Indus River originates in Tibet, close to Lake Mansarovar. It crosses into India in the Jammu and Kashmir provinces of Ladakh. One of the Himalayan rivers, the Indus, creates a breathtaking valley here. In the Kashmir region, it is related to the Zaskar, the Nubra, the Shyok, and the Hunza. Baltistan and Gilgit are stops along the Indus River before it rises in the Attock Mountains.

Ganga River

The Gangotri Glacier is the source of water for “Bhagirathi,” the Ganga’s headwaters, before it joins the Alaknanda near Devprayag in Uttarakhand. After the confluence near Devprayag, it is called Ganga. The Ganga enters the plains on the lowlands of Haridwar. The Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak, and Kosi are just a few of the notable rivers that rise in the Himalayas and flow into the Himalayan River Ganga. The Yamunotri Glacier in the Himalayas is where the Yamuna River originates. It travels parallel to the Ganga until joining it as a right bank tributary close to Allahabad.

Brahmaputra River

From the Kailash ranges of the Himalayas (near Mansarovar Lake) the Brahmaputra originates. It is a little longer than the Indus and the majority of its course is outside India. It moves parallel to the Himalayas eastward and takes a U-turn at Namcha Barwa. Tibet is a land of extreme cold and aridity, hence its rivers transport less sand and water. It travels through a heavily populated area in India and carries heavy water and silt as it is fed by heavy rains in India.

About Peninsular Rivers in India

The Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery, Narmada, Tapti, Narmada, Mahanadi, and Damodar are some of India’s principal peninsular rivers. Most of these rivers flow through much of central and southern India after rising in the Western Ghats. Peninsula rivers are non-perennial, and seasonal, and receive maximum water in the rainy season.

Why do the Rivers of Peninsular India have Well-Defined Rigid Channels in sharp contrast to the Himalayan river?
  • Peninsular rivers flow on a rock structure from the Gondwanaland epoch, which was formed as a result of lava solidifying (hard rock).
  • Peninsular rivers flow across a surface that is primarily flat.
  • As the Himalayas continue to rise, sedimentary sediments are being deposited over by the Himalayan rivers.
  • As a result of the loose rock debris, these rivers are cutting downward and creating “V” shaped valleys.

All these factors result in the phenomenon that rivers of peninsular India have a well-defined rigid channel in contrast to the Himalayan Rivers.
