Dharmvir Bharti (1926-1997)

Andha Yug is written immediately after the partition of the Indian subcontinent.

It is set in the background of the last day of the Mahabharata war.

His novel Gunahon Ka Devta became a classic.

Vijai Tendulkar (1928- 2008)

Ghashiram Kotwal (1972; “Ghashiram the Constable”) was recognized as one of the longest-running plays in the world.

It is written in Marathi, based on the life of Nana Phadnavis.

Girish Karnad (1938- 2019)

Hayavadana (1971), widely recognized as among the most important plays of post-independence India. For his contributions to theatre, he was awarded the Padma Shri.

The play tells the story of two friends who are in love with the same woman and who accidentally swap heads.

Habib Tanvir (1923-2009)

Agra Bazar (1954), brought urban middle-class actors together with uneducated folk artists for the first time on the Indian stage.

The play is set in the 19th century when the Mughal empire was tottering and Agra - famous the world over for the Taj Mahal - was being constantly attacked.
