Given:

A policeman starts chasing a thief who is 500 m ahead of him. The speed of the thief is 18 km/h, and the speed of the policeman is 36 km/h.

Formula used:

Relative speed = Speed of policeman - Speed of thief

Time = Distance / Relative speed

Calculations:

Speed of thief = 18 km/h = 18 × (1000/3600) m/s = 5 m/s

Speed of policeman = 36 km/h = 36 × (1000/3600) m/s = 10 m/s

Relative speed = 10 m/s - 5 m/s = 5 m/s

Distance = 500 m

⇒ Time = 500 / 5

⇒ Time = 100 seconds

∴ The correct answer is option (1).
