Action Research achieves its goal by using a ‘cyclic research process, where each cycle is made up of four phases - Plan, Act (implementing plans), Observe (systematically) and Reflect. It is a continuous cycle one can circle back to earlier phases within a cycle (e.g., cycle back and forth between reflection and planning).
- Plan: An understanding of the problem is developed and plans are made to make a change in the existing or current setup. For example, a teacher notices that an existing teaching strategy is not yielding the optimum results and plans to introduce a new teaching strategy to overcome this.
- Act: The changes which are planned are implemented or carried out in this phase. For example, the new teaching strategy that has been planned is introduced in this phase.
- Observe: The impact of the change implemented earlier is observed by the researcher. The researcher collects, records, and obtains evidence about the success of actions. For example, the impact of the new teaching strategy on the student's performance is observed.
- Reflect: The data and results from the previous phase are reflected upon. The researcher reflects on the results and considers strategies for improvement and future planning begins. For example, the teachers reflect on the impact of the new teaching strategy and if the impact was positive then it becomes part of the teaching strategy, or else the cycle is repeated.
