Speed in the first half (v1) = 15 m/s

Speed in the second half (v2) = 1.6 × 15 m/s = 24 m/s

Total time (T) = 39 minutes = 2340 seconds

Concept Used:

Average speed = 2s1s2/(s1 + s2)

Calculation:

Average speed = 2s1s2/(s1 + s2)

Average speed = 2 × 15 × 24/(15 + 24) = 720/39 m/s

Total distance = Average speed × time taken

Total distance = 720/39 × 2340 = 43200 m = 43.2 km

∴ Rakesh travelled a total distance of 43.2 km.
