The curve plotted between flux density (B) and magnetizing force (H) of a material is called magnetizing or B-H curve.
The shape of the curve is non-linear.
- When the magnetizing force is increased, the magnetic flux also increases. But after a certain point, the flux density does not increase even though the magnetizing force is increased. This point is known as the saturation point.
- When the magnetizing force is decreased, the magnetic flux also decreases, but there remains certain magnetism even though magnetizing force becomes zero. This is known as retentivity.
- The magnetizing force needed to demagnetize the magnetic material completely is known as its coercivity.
