Question
Download Solution PDFThree solid iron cubes of edges 8 cm, 10 cm and 12 cm are melted together to make a new cube. It is observed that 496 cm3 of the melted material is lost due to improper handling. The area (in cm2) of the whole surface of the newly formed cube is:
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFGiven:
Edges of the three solid iron cubes = 8 cm, 10 cm, 12 cm.
Volume lost due to improper handling = 496 cm3.
Formula Used:
Volume of a cube = side3
Surface area of a cube = 6 × side2
Calculation:
Volume of the first cube = 83 = 512 cm3
Volume of the second cube = 103 = 1000 cm3
Volume of the third cube = 123 = 1728 cm3
Total volume before melting = 512 + 1000 + 1728 = 3240 cm3
Volume of the newly formed cube = 3240 - 496 = 2744 cm3
Let the edge of the new cube be x cm.
So, x3 = 2744
⇒ x = 14 cm
Surface area of the newly formed cube = 6 × 142
⇒ Surface area = 6 × 196
⇒ Surface area = 1176 cm2
The area of the whole surface of the newly formed cube is 1176 cm2.
