To avoid this, a pressure relief valve is used to release the excess pressure.
It is a spring-loaded valve.
The spring’s tension depends on the system’s pressure.
When the cooling water of the engine is heated up it expands which results in high pressure in the system.
If the force due to pressure is more than the spring’s tension the valve opens and water vapor/steam escapes through the overflow pipe until the pressure is lowered to the pre-set value.
