The reactance of a capacitor is given by:

XC \(1\over 2\times π\times f\times C\)

where

XC = reactance

f = supply frequency

C = capacitance

R.M.S. value of capacitor current is given by:

\(I_{rms}= {V_{rms} \over X_C}\)

Calculation:

Given

C = 90 μF

f =   50 Hz 

Vrms = 230 V

XC\(1\over 2\times π\times f\times C\)

\(1\over 2\times π\times50 \times 90 \times 10 ^{ -6}\)

= 35.36 Ω 

\(I_{rms}= {V_{rms} \over X_C}\)

\(230 \over 35.36\)

= 6.5 A
